Podium finish for Blomqvist on WEC debut

Tom Blomqvist made an impressive debut in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) as he helped the #30 Extreme Speed Motorsports team to a P2 finish in the 6 Hours of Shanghai this weekend. Having competed in the Asian Le Mans Series a week earlier, Blomqvist continued his tour of Asia in the penultimate race of the 2016 WEC season.

The weekend saw Blomqvist rejoin his former Formula 3 teammates, Sean Gelael and Antonio Giovanazzi in the Jagonya-Ayam backed #30 Ligier JS P2 Nissan. Having recorded a season’s best finish of fourth at the 6 Hours of Fuji, Tom’s arrival helped them secure their first podium finish of the season.

Having started Sunday’s showcase event from the second row, Blomqvist and his teammates produced an unerring display to finish second in the LMP2 class – a result that Blomqvist himself was delighted with.

“I am really happy with this weekend’s result – finishing second on debut isn’t a bad effort! It was fun to drive alongside Sean and Antonio again; we were a great team and the got the result that we deserved.”

The curtain falls on the 2016 WEC season in less than a fortnight’s time at the 6 Hours of Bahrain and Blomqvist would be more than happy to compete in more WEC races in the future.

“I have to admit – I would love to do further races in the WEC in the future. It was a really enjoyable weekend and I enjoyed the LMP2 car.”
