Race Result: Difficult race for Blomqvist in Virginia

Race 1 Race 2

The Michelin GT Challenge at VIR, the ninth round of the 2019 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, provided a difficult weekend for Tom Blomqvist and his #25 outfit as they finished seventh in the GTLM class.

The Virginia International Raceway played host to a challenging weekend for Tom and his Team BMW RLL team-mate Connor De Phillippi. Despite driving a faultless race without any incidents, the #25 car ultimately lacked the speed needed to be in contention for a podium at the top end of the grid.

From the outset, it was evident that the team did not have the pace to contest with the remainder of the field as they finished the weekend’s practice sessions at the tail-end of the standings.

With Connor at the wheel for the wet qualifying session, he could only put the BMW M8 GTE car eighth on the grid as the BMW suffered with a lack of pace, similar to the sister BMW car who lined up one spot ahead of the #25.

When it came to the race, the team once again struggled for speed to challenge the cars at the top end of the field. Despite the team working tirelessly to try and make up ground, Tom and Connor could not manage anything better than seventh place come the end of the two-hour and 40-minute race, to finish one place ahead of the #24 sister car.

“We expected to be competitive but did not have the pace that we needed,” Tom said after the weekend. “We thought that we might get better and better during the race but things didn't work out as we expected. It is tough when we both drove our hearts out, but things were beyond our control. Our focus is now on Laguna Seca in two week’s where I hope we can have a stronger result.”

Tom’s penultimate round of his 2019 IMSA season will take place at Laguna Seca on the 14th September.
