Blomqvist wins race 1 at Silverstone

London, UK – April 19, 2014 – Tom Blomqvist has won the first race of the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season at Silverstone today.

Making his debut with Jagonya Ayam with Carlin, the 20 year-old claimed pole yesterday and then led the race from start to finish. A collision early on in the race saw the safety car being deployed, but Blomqvist kept his nerves at the re-start and went on to claim his first Formula 3 European Championship victory.

“Of course, I am delighted with this victory,” said Blomqvist. “I intended to make a good start and pull a gap during the first few laps. I succeeded very well. After I had built a little advantage, I was able to control the race until the end. I am very happy with such a start into the season.”

In the second 18-lap race, which was run a few laps later, Blomqvist started third on the grid. He unfortunately lacked the speed he had shown in the opening round earlier that he won and had to settle for fourth.

The third race of the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season will return to Silverstone tomorrow at 9:15 a.m. GMT.
